PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
As a Senior Journalist on the Money and Work digital team, you will write, commission and edit online articles, including news stories which may lead the website, features, analysis, live page posts and explainers. We are looking for an experienced Senior Journalist who is confident in running a news desk and working across a broad range of stories.
The job will involve working four 10-hour shifts a week including early mornings from 6am and late evenings until 0030, as well as Sundays.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
The Money and Work team aims to make the economy and business engaging and understandable for our audiences. It's a fun and varied job, where you'll write, report and edit a huge range of stories, covering anything from the latest interest rate decision, to a drop in the price of cheese, to share and bond price movements to how working from home is becoming less common.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
• Writing stories for the website, with the ability to bring subjects - which some readers may find dull - to life.
• Running the news desk, staying calm under pressure and making sensible editorial decisions quickly.
• Liaising closely with teams across the BBC, including senior website and broadcast editors, as well as giving journalists detailed briefs to deliver on stories, so excellent communication skills are a must.
• Sub editing stories with an eye for detail and clickable headlines.
• Reading and making sense of company results and financial market movements, and being able to pick out a strong top line that will resonate with a non-business specialist.
• Come up with original ideas for stories as well as how to treat them, and suggest and carry out interviews with relevant people to make our business stories distinctive.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
• Excellent and demonstrable knowledge of business and economics in the UK and globally
• At least five years' experience of writing and editing fast-paced, breaking business news for digital audiences with attention to accuracy, context and tone
• Proven ability to cut through jargon, and make complex stories appealing and understandable to a broad business audience
• Experience of writing in a variety of formats to tight deadlines from breaking news and explainers to live page posts and analysis
• Proven ability to come up with angles and approaches to the big stories of the day that will help us reach new and diverse audiences
• Excellent editorial judgement and understanding of the BBC's editorial values
If you can bring some of these skills and experiences, along with transferable strengths, we'd love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
