Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Test Rigs) - Submarines

New Today

Overview

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Test Rigs) - Submarines, Derby/Hybrid. This role supports the design of new multi-million-pound test rigs and modifications to existing test rigs, located primarily at the Centre of Excellence for Engineering Test Laboratory, Raynesway, Derby. The role is within Rolls-Royce Submarines and focuses on test rig design and through-life support for propulsion systems used in the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet.

What you will be doing

  • Generate requirements, scope work, and plan tasks in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Apply first principles to mechanical designs and use standard fluid flow and thermal hydraulic theory to justify design decisions related to system and mechanical layout, component selection and sizing, manufacturability, and fit-for-purpose considerations.
  • Integrate design and health and safety principles from multiple disciplines into credible technical solutions and arguments.
  • Act as the design intent owner for a range of test rigs (often bespoke hot and pressurised water rigs), working with multi-discipline teams, internal resources, external design partners, and equipment suppliers.
  • Collaborate with the facilities/operations team to ensure safe and effective operation of test rigs for data generation related to R&T, verification and validation, component qualification, and through-life performance.

Qualifications and experience

  • Experience ideally in a heavily regulated industry (e.g., Aerospace, Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Energy, Water or Nuclear).
  • Experience in specifying, designing, justifying, building, and commissioning complex mechanical and fluid systems; track record of delivering solutions to time, cost, and quality targets.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles, process safety, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Experience in producing detailed component and assembly drawings to a high standard, including GD&T. Experience with Unigraphics NX and Teamcenter is highly desirable.
  • Experience operating complex fluid/chemical or mechanical systems is desirable.
  • Understanding of design processes and safety assessment tools (e.g., HAZOPs/FMEAs).
  • Degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or another design engineering discipline.
  • Security Check clearance is required; Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if not currently held.

What we offer

  • Excellent development opportunities, a competitive salary, and exceptional benefits, including bonus and employee support services.
  • Hybrid working to balance office, home, or other remote locations; attendance at the workplace for collaboration is expected on average three days per week.
