Senior Mechanical Engineer - Energy & Power (Multiple Locations, UK) role at Burns & McDonnell. We are expanding our UK business and seeking an experienced senior mechanical engineer with design development, owners engineer and EPC experience to work on power and energy transition projects across the UK and International regions. Projects will include power generation and decarbonisation technologies that support the UK pathway to 2050 Net Zero, including on-site and grid-connected solutions such as BESS, Heat Networks and Distributed Heat and Power.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design of projects from conceptual phase through design completion to meet project needs as defined by project managers.
  • Prepare mechanical equipment specifications and data sheets, RFQs, technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.
  • Review mechanical equipment vendor drawings; interface with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, detailers and designers.
  • Participate in development of project schedule, scope, budget, staffing and construction planning; manage change orders effectively.
  • Apply expert knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts, practices, codes and procedures.
  • Develop non-standard design solutions for complex projects.
  • Quality review production drawings and project-related data; verify corrections across CAD software.
  • Coordinate construction administration with field personnel to resolve design-related issues, perform calculations, field inspections and testing of mechanical systems.
  • Lead field inspections, measurements or calculations for public and private clients.
  • Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients, customers and contractors; pursue new business opportunities and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.
  • Develop cost proposals and qualification statements to meet financial targets; prepare project budgets and cost estimates; report on project performance.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to the mechanical engineering practice; mentor less experienced engineers.
  • Ensure QA/QC process adherence and effective communication with other engineering disciplines.
  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 7 years mechanical engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineering License (PE) preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of mechanical design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE) and standard engineering techniques.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience leading discipline design for large projects and delegating tasks; ability to lead execution and resolve issues in a team environment.
  • Strong critical thinking, methodical and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, teamwork, organization and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications; ability to travel.
