Senior Microfluidics Engineer

12 Days Old

About Unravel Health

Unravel Health is developing a handheld saliva-based at-home lab that quantifies multiple hormones and biomarkers in under 90 seconds. Developed on patented biosensor technology, over 8 years it enables daily, non-invasive measurements of up to 16 markers from a 10 µL sample. This is transforming how we understand one of the most fundamental parts of women's health - their fluctuating hormone trends over time.

About the Role

We are looking for a highly experienced and motivated Senior Materials Scientist/Microfluidic Engineer to lead material innovation and process development for our microfluidic cartridge devices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead material innovation and process development for microfluidic cartridge devices.
  • Hands-on experience in microfluidic device design, prototyping, and testing.
  • Develop scalable manufacturing processes with a focus on cost-effectiveness and yield improvement.

Technical Expertise

  • Hands-on experience in microfluidic device design, prototyping, and testing.
  • Deep knowledge of polymers, composites, coatings, and surface treatments for microfluidic and diagnostic applications.
  • Familiarity with microfabrication and assembly techniques (e.g., bonding methods, lithography, laser cutting, 3D printing, or injection moulding).
  • Proficiency in characterisation tools (mechanical, thermal, surface, and optical) and statistical methods for quality control.
  • Knowledge of fluid dynamics, reagent compatibility, and biofouling mitigation in microfluidic environments.
  • Experience with freeze-drying (lyophilisation) techniques for stabilising biological reagents.
  • Expertise in long-term reagent storage, stabilisation strategies, and integration into diagnostic devices.
  • Experience in working with biosensors (electrochemical, optical, or immunoassay-based).
  • Familiarity with CAD software (SolidWorks or AutoCAD) for device design.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and quality standards (ISO 13485, medical device development).
  • Background in sustainability and recyclability of materials in device design is an advantage.

Qualifications

  • PhD (preferred) or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong background in microfluidics, biosensors, or lab-on-a-chip technologies.
  • Proven experience in materials integration into functional devices and understanding of system-level performance requirements.
