Overview

Senior Overhead Line (OHL) Engineer (Energy) role at WSP in the UK & Ireland. The position involves leading a team of design engineers specialising in Overhead Transmission Lines, working on a variety of projects for overhead transmission lines ranging from 11kV to 400kV.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical evaluations and solve problems for team members.
  • Prepare written proposals outlining project knowledge, including timeline, resources, budget, objectives, and goals.
  • Offer technical guidance throughout project implementation, statutory planning, and public consultation events.
  • Manage engineering and design activities related to overhead lines, including PLS-CADD modelling, line routing, structure analysis and loading trees, design criteria, sag-tension calculations, insulator/conductor considerations, swing angles, damper systems, structure spotting, clearance reports, and conductor/insulator selection.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, perform conductor thermal ratings, and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Undertake studies to identify a technically preferred solution or layout to present to the client.
  • Participate in industry working groups such as CIGRE and IEEE.

What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent technical discipline, preferably Electrical or Power Engineering.
  • Experience in overhead line engineering up to 400kV.
  • Experience on upgrading work projects such as utilisation of High Temperature Low Sag conductors.
  • Desirable skills – PLS CADD / POLE / TOWER.
  • Knowledge of galloping studies, EMF and field effects calculation, wake effect, and AC interference for gas pipelines (advantageous).
  • Willingness and ability to travel as projects dictate.
