A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced Power Electronics Design Engineer to join a leading engineering organisation operating at the forefront of the defence and aerospace sectors.
This is a key technical position, offering the chance to lead the design and development of advanced high- and low-voltage switch-mode power converters and associated control systems. You’ll be involved throughout the full product lifecycle — from initial concept through to production — developing robust, efficient, and reliable designs for high-performance applications operating in demanding environments.
Key Responsibilities of the Senior Power Electronics Design Engineer: Lead the design and development of new power conversion systems and control circuitry.
Define and optimise circuit topologies and architectures to meet challenging performance, size, and efficiency targets.
Design analogue and digital control and monitoring circuits for complex power systems.
Use modelling and simulation tools to analyse, validate, and optimise circuit performance.
Collaborate with mechanical, production, and manufacturing teams to ensure designs are reliable, repeatable, and manufacturable.
Support the New Product Introduction (NPI) process through design reviews, production readiness, and handover to manufacturing.
Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and leadership to junior engineers.
Perform root cause analysis and drive design and process improvements.
Act as a technical authority for key product lines, supporting bids, proposals, and customer reviews.
Deliver internal R&D projects on time, within budget, and to the required technical standard.
Skills & Experience Required of the Senior Power Electronics Design Engineer: Degree, MSc, or PhD in Electronics or a related discipline.
Proven experience in the design and development of switch-mode power supplies (SMPS), including high-voltage and high-power systems.
Strong understanding of analogue and digital control design principles.
Skilled in circuit simulation, modelling, and analysis.
Familiar with FMEA, DFMA, and design-for-manufacture principles.
Experience leading design projects within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
Desirable skills of the Senior Power Electronics Design Engineer: Experience working within the defence, aerospace, or other high-reliability sectors.
Familiarity with relevant military and aerospace design standards.
Knowledge of high-voltage design and associated safety and compliance requirements.
Understanding of configuration control and quality assurance processes.
