Overview
Senior / Principal Traffic Signals Engineer role at WSP. This position is part of the Liveable Places Traffic Signal Design team, ideally based in Liverpool, Leeds, Glasgow or Southampton offices, with consideration for other WSP UK locations. You will lead day-to-day technical delivery of highway consultancy services to support clients through all project stages from feasibility and concept design through planning, detailed design, construction and post-commissioning support. This role is client facing and requires a track record of delivering schemes in local or national transport contexts.
What you will do
- Lead day-to-day technical delivery of highway consultancy services for traffic signal design and related packages.
- Supervise, train, check and approve work by junior colleagues, applying technical expertise in traffic signals or traffic engineering.
- Manage traffic signal projects to coordinate multi-disciplinary inputs across varying scales, complexities and values.
- Liaise with clients to build strong relationships, manage expectations and provide comprehensive advice.
- Undertake project technical lead and reviewer roles.
- Support others to maximise contribution to project and team goals.
- Prepare fee proposals and manage budgets for individual projects.
- Develop and deliver discrete and overall project solutions.
- Lead and manage junior staff in delivering traffic signal design packages (drawings, standard details, specifications, controller configurations, MOVA datasets, FAT/SAT, etc.).
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, Environmental Legislation and in-house QA standards/processes.
- Contribute to team resource coordination and help set up project teams with appropriate roles.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate
- Knowledge and experience of traffic signal design at multiple project stages, including local transport modelling with software such as LinSig and controller configuration TR2500; experience with SCOOT and MOVA is advantageous.
- Experience leading one or more design disciplines in relevant projects (road, public transport, active travel, public or private development).
- Experience in contract document preparation or contract administration/site supervision using Public Works Contracts.
- Able to use and check design outputs in software such as Autodesk Civils 3D and KeySignals.
- Proactive in managing change on tasks/projects, communicating impacts on programme, cost and quality.
- Strong communication, client/stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.
- Working towards or having achieved Chartered Civil Engineer or Incorporated Engineer is advantageous.
- Understanding and application of relevant design codes (DMRB, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, Local Authority design guidance) and preparation of drawings for contract documentation with departures from standard where needed.
- Experience complying with Designers Duties under CDM regulations.
