Overview

Senior / Principal Traffic Signals Engineer role at WSP in the UK & Ireland.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and talented Senior or Principal Engineer to join the Liveable Places Traffic Signal Design team, ideally based in Liverpool, Leeds, Glasgow or Southampton offices, but other UK locations will be considered. You will lead day-to-day technical delivery of highway consultancy services to support clients through all stages of the project life-cycle from feasibility and concept design through to planning, detailed design, construction and post-commissioning support. This role is client facing and requires a track record of delivering schemes in local or national transport.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day technical delivery of highway consultancy services for traffic signal design, supervising, training, checking and approving work by junior colleagues.
  • Manage traffic signal projects to coordinate multi-disciplinary inputs across projects of varying scale, complexity and value.
  • Develop strong client relationships, proactively managing expectations and providing comprehensive advisory support.
  • Provide project technical lead and reviewer roles; support others to maximise contribution to project goals.
  • Prepare fee proposals and manage budgets for individual projects.
  • Develop and deliver discrete and overall project solutions.
  • Lead and manage junior staff in the delivery of traffic signal design packages, including drawings, details, specifications, controller configurations, MOVA datasets, FAT/SAT, etc.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, Environmental legislation and in-house quality assurance standards/processes.
  • Support team resource coordination and help set up teams and assign roles.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Knowledge and experience of traffic signal design at various project life-cycle stages and local transport modelling using software such as LinSig; experience with SCOOT and MOVA is advantageous.
  • Experience in leading one or more design disciplines in relevant projects (road, public transport, active travel, public/private development).
  • Experience with contract document preparation or contract administration/site supervision using Public Works Contracts.
  • Ability to use and check design outputs in software such as Autodesk Civils 3D and KeySignals.
  • Ability to manage change on tasks/projects, communicating impacts on programme, cost and quality.
  • Good communication, client/stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.
  • Working towards or having achieved Chartered Civil Engineer or Incorporated Engineer is advantageous.
  • Understanding of relevant design codes (e.g., Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, TSRGD) and preparation of drawings for contract documentation, including departures from standard.
  • Experience of Designers Duties under CDM regulations.
