Overall Role
We’re looking for a Senior Product Design Engineer to help shape the next generation of innovative, ergonomic, and sustainable power tools. Collaborating with industrial designers, mechanical engineers, project managers, marketing, and manufacturing teams, you’ll play a key role in turning early concepts into high-quality, market-ready products.
In this role, you won’t just be designing a component, you’ll have real ownership throughout the entire product journey, from concept to shelf. You’ll also work with external design partners and lead design reviews to ensure quality and alignment at every stage.
Key Responsibilities
Lead industrial design and engineering activities within New Product Development (NPD), delivering technically robust solutions from concept to production—on time, on budget, and to specification and the brief.
Utilise CAD tools (high proficiency SolidWorks) to create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings.
Operating without the need for technical supervision, taking ownership for Industrial design, and engineering technical issues.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, manufacturing, and quality assurance, to ensure design feasibility and manufacturability.
Own the creation, evaluation and testing of design solutions and competitor products - producing reports on findings and outlining recommendations.
Lead design reviews internally and externally with suppliers and internal customers.
Utilise rapid prototyping to evaluate design concepts and gather feedback.
Compilation and entry of supporting data such as product structures, design record files, engineering changes etc.
Lead projects, including completing project deliverables for the Senior Project Managers within agreed timescales.
Conduct design reviews, risk assessments, and failure mode analyses to identify and mitigate potential issues.
Stay abreast of industry trends and incorporate innovative technologies and materials into designs.
Abilities, Experience & Skills
Essential:
- Bachelor’s degree in Product Design/Industrial Design/Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- High Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks) and PDM systems. Advanced surface modelling skills.
- In depth experience in design for Injection moulding, and ideally aluminium die castings.
- Design of mechanical/ electro-mechanical products/ mechanisms using 3D CAD
- Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacturability.
- Excellent critical thinking skills and attention to detail.
Desirable:
- Appreciation of form, aesthetics, and ergonomics of manufactured products.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in product design engineering, preferably within the power tools or durable consumer goods industry.
- Experience in rapid prototyping, product testing, and validation.
- Exceptional understanding of product development lifecycle, DFM principles, and quality assurance practices.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
- Familiarity with regulatory standards and compliance requirements.
- Knowledge of electronic components integration in power tools.
- Experience communicating with Far East suppliers.
- Experience of working with and managing third party design & engineering consultancies.
