We're seeking a Backend Engineer who is keen to rapidly accelerate their career and make a monumental impact on a critical area of our business. What will you be working on?

You will join our High Volume team, who is on a mission to profoundly improve the experience for our customers making significant transactions, alleviating their anxieties, and ensuring their financial needs are met with ease and confidence. While this naturally drives substantial growth in our cross-currency volume (a potential annual increase worth billions), our core focus is always on the customer.

In this role, you will be instrumental in:

• Simplifying Complex Transactions: Developing and implementing robust backend solutions that make sending large amounts cross-border significantly less cumbersome and more convenient for our customers.

• Reducing Customer Anxiety & Building Trust: Crafting systems that create clear awareness about potential challenges with large transactions and help customers plan ahead, ensuring their funds are transferred smoothly and on time. Your work will directly enhance reliability and transparency, fostering greater trust.

• Empowering Through Education & Features: Building tailored flows that enable such high volume customers to easily discover and learn about everything Wise can do for them, ensuring they don't need to look elsewhere for their financial needs.

• Delivering Missing Functionality: Collaborating closely with Product Managers, Designers, and Analysts to bring new, essential features to life. This includes increasing in-product limits, systemising exceptions for large transfers, and laying the groundwork for future game-changing features that address sophisticated financial needs.

• Driving Engineering Excellence: Contributing to the design, development, and deployment of scalable, reliable, and maintainable backend services. You'll engage in systematic thinking from first principles, applying strong problem-solving abilities, algorithms, and data structures to decompose complex problems.

• Learning & Growing: Working alongside experienced engineers, you'll rapidly expand your technical capabilities, understanding of distributed systems, and product intuition. You'll be actively coached and mentored, with opportunities to take increasing ownership of initiatives and influence technical direction.

• Customer-Centric Impact: Continuously asking "why are we building this?" and connecting your technical contributions directly to making our customers' lives better. Your work will directly impact customer satisfaction and trust by improving the fundamental mechanics of high-value money movement.

What do you need?

• A "Product Engineer" Mindset: You're an engineer first, but you think like a product owner. You're inherently curious about the "why" behind the "what," and you're driven by solving real customer problems, not just writing code.

• Fundamental Technical Strength: A solid grasp of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and systematic problem-solving. You're keen to apply these to build scalable, correct, and performant systems.

• A Builder's Spirit: You are excited by the prospect of building new features and improving existing ones to deliver tangible customer value. You see a current need for more engineering capacity as an exciting opportunity to step up and make a difference.

• Ownership DNA: You care about outcomes, not just shipping code. You take pride in seeing your work through from conception to deployment and beyond.

• Exceptional Learning Velocity: You absorb new concepts, technologies, and domain knowledge at an incredible pace, eager to push your boundaries and grow beyond your current experience level.

• Collaborative & Humble: You are a joy to work with, confident in your abilities but humble enough to learn from others and contribute positively to team dynamics. We specifically avoid ego-driven personalities.

• Backend Proficiency: Experience with backend development (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Python, Go, Node.js or similar), understanding of API design, and database interactions. Experience with distributed systems or microservices is a bonus, but a strong desire to learn and master these is key.
