Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and deployment of high-quality, cloud-native software solutions using platforms like AWS and Azure, and technologies such as Kubernetes, Java, Python, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Be responsible for application modernisation, system integration, and ensuring service reliability while championing best practices in engineering and accessibility.
  • Work across multiple programming languages and modern technologies to help build and modernise systems that power the UKs largest government department.
  • Collaborate in an agile environment with engineers, architects, product teams, and other stakeholders, focusing on continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentor junior developers, and promote engineering excellence and best practices.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Full-Stack Development: Designing, building, and deploying end-to-end software solutions using modern languages and frameworks such as Java, Python, Node.js, and React.
  • Cloud & DevOps Expertise: Experience with AWS and Azure, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code technologies like Terraform.
  • Technical Leadership: Ability to lead engineering teams, set technical direction, and mentor others.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Experience working with cross-functional teams including Product Owners, Architects, Designers, and Testers.
  • Problem Solving & Modernisation: Ability to analyse complex systems, modernise legacy applications, and manage incidents and problems to ensure service continuity.

Details, Wages & Perks

Location: You’ll join us in one of our digital hubs in Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle-upon-Tyne, whichever is most convenient for you.

Hybrid Working: Hybrid model — some time at home (40%) and some time in a hub (60%).

Pay: Up to £78,517 per year.

Pension: Civil service pension with employer contributions worth 28.97%, up to £19,758 per year.

Holidays: 26 days rising to 31 days over time. Up to 3 extra days off per month on flexi-time, plus public holidays.
