Senior/Principal Electrical Engineer - BESS

Overview

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) focused Senior/Principal Electrical Engineer in the UK Transmission and Distribution (T&D) department. The role covers HV design for electrical power projects at transmission and distribution voltage levels, with emphasis on renewables and energy storage, grid connections, and private networks at typically 11kV to 400kV. Projects include feasibility, optioneering, FEED, detailed design and design assurance on existing or new build renewable generation, including pumped storage hydro, PV and wind, typically with collocated BESS.

Responsibilities

• Lead or contribute to Front End Engineering Design (FEED), planning and feasibility studies, and detailed design of energy storage systems including associated grid connections, control and metering.
• Collaborate with internal AECOM clients delivering large renewable generation or private wire projects.
• Support bidding, project management and quality activities in addition to engineering tasks.

Qualifications

• Experience with consultancy, contractor, equipment manufacturer or electrical utility in the energy sector; suitable experience as FEED designer, detailed design or owner’s engineer.
• Strong understanding of renewable generation and energy storage technology, including battery storage chemistries.
• Experience designing HV grid connections, metering and control requirements for battery storage installations, including BESS collocated with renewables.
• Knowledge of grid connection requirements for renewables and energy storage (e.g., G99).
• Knowledge of electrical plant items and control systems (transformers, cables, circuit breakers, HV protection & control).
• Good teamwork, client-focused mindset and customer-facing skills; ability to work across multiple projects.
• Ideally a Degree in Electrical Engineering; project management experience (budget, time, quality); multi-discipline engineering project experience; design & site construction review.
• Focus on energy storage with advantageous knowledge of grid connection considerations.
