Initial 3 Months (with potential extension) Our client A rapidly expanding industrial engineering business delivering end-to-end automation and control system solutions for the warehouse and logistics industry. Their services span PLC programming, HMI software, hardware design, panel manufacture, installation, commissioning, and ongoing technical support. The contractor We are seeking a skilled Commissioning & Service Engineer to support our growing client base across automation and production machinery. The successful candidate will be responsible for the commissioning, testing, and servicing of electrical and control systems, ensuring high-quality performance and reliability in the field. You'll support the engineering team on both new system commissioning and reactive service projects, stepping in when clients need technical expertise to keep automated systems running. This role has opened due to new project wins, and you'll play a key part in ensuring high-quality delivery. Key Responsibilities Commissioning and testing of electrical & control systems once built. Site-based service and commissioning work across client locations. Providing reactive service support when clients face highly technical electrical or controls issues. Attending client sites, diagnosing machine/system issues holistically, and identifying root causes. Fault finding through PLC access, rewriting code, and adjusting where required. Working on a variety of machines including conveyors, robots, scanners, and stackers. Predominantly working with Siemens S7 PLCs, with some Allen Bradley projects. Troubleshooting common problems such as sensor positions, coding errors, or software misconfigurations. Travelling to client sites as needed. Day-to-Day Responsibilities Perform commissioning and testing on newly built systems. Provide technical service and support for client machinery. Fault find and resolve PLC/software issues. Conduct on-site diagnostics and repairs, from system-level assessments to component-level fixes. Update and adapt PLC code using Siemens TIA Portal (and occasionally Allen Bradley software). Collaborate with clients to minimise downtime and ensure operational efficiency. Key Challenges in the Role Rapidly diagnosing complex machine/system issues under time pressure. Balancing proactive commissioning with reactive service demands. Working across varied client sites and adapting to different machinery setups. Ensuring accurate PLC modifications without compromising wider system performance. Required Skills & Experience Proven background in commissioning or service roles within automation or production machinery. Strong ability to fault find and repair Siemens PLCs. Confident in writing, modifying, and troubleshooting PLC code. Skilled in diagnosing issues down to component level. Hands-on experience with Siemens S7 systems (essential), Allen Bradley (desirable). Previous training in Siemens TIA Portal, Safety Systems, and Siemens Drives (ideal but not essential).
