Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
Salary: £50,000 – £60,000
Contract: Full-time, Permanent

About the Role

We’re looking for a methodical, detail-driven Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to help us raise the bar for quality across our Laravel-based platform. 

You’ll be at the heart of our QA function, shaping test strategy, improving coverage, and making sure every release is stable, reliable, and production-ready.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Test Strategy: Define and run both automated and manual tests across backend, frontend, APIs, and job queues.
• Automation: Extend and maintain test suites, ensuring coverage of business-critical features and tricky edge cases.
• Continuous Integration: Support and improve CI/CD pipelines with strong quality gates.
• Environment Reliability: Keep test environments consistent, with reliable data handling and simulation of real-world scenarios.
• Problem Solving: Develop, debug, and refine automation scripts to improve reliability and reduce false positives.
• Collaboration: Work closely with developers and DevOps to ensure smooth, dependable releases.
• Knowledge Sharing: Support junior QA colleagues and champion best practices across the team.
• Risk Management: Identify and log potential quality risks early, collaborating on fixes before they become issues.

Skills & Experience We’re Looking For

• Strong experience in manual and automated testing across backend and frontend systems.
• Practical knowledge of modern PHP frameworks (Laravel a big plus).
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated quality gates.
• Solid understanding of databases and how to use test data to replicate real-world usage.
• Strong problem-solver who can work independently and raise risks early.
• Excellent communicator, confident writing clear documentation and collaborating with engineers and DevOps.
• Comfortable in Agile, fast-moving environments where priorities shift.
