This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working.

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: Up to £57,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Universal Content team is responsible for delivering metadata to the BBC’s online and broadcast products. We support several large-scale programme metadata APIs and are currently building a new metadata distribution system to ensure content is shared reliably and efficiently across the BBC.

Our backend systems are used by teams across the organisation - including BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport, and BBC Weather - to determine what content can be played and when. These teams rely on us to deliver metadata about programmes and short-form content quickly and accurately.

We are two feature teams of around ten engineers each, working in a collaborative, agile environment. Our teams help define their own ways of working, drawing from industry best practices and internal experience. We value continuous learning and knowledge sharing.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Knowledge of one or more of the following programming languages: Java, Python, Clojure
  • Solid understanding of software engineering QA practices, including TDD and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience of building and deploying applications on cloud infrastructure
  • Experience of working within established architectural patterns and technical direction
  • Ability to demonstrate strong sense of ownership and accountability for your work

DESIRED:

  • Apache Kafka or other data streaming technologies
  • Building and deploying containerised applications using Docker and Kubernetes
  • REST API design and development
  • Data modelling and database design
  • You enjoy working with others and value collaboration
