About Engineering at Engine by Starling

We’re looking for Backend Software Engineers to work on the Engine Platform, extending features for banks globally and building new capabilities from scratch for markets beyond the UK. Our engineers work across primary tech stacks, contributing to features and tooling that support our platform and customers.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to our award-winning platform and internal tooling
• Build new features and products from scratch in a configurable way
• Share knowledge and contribute to our learning culture
• Own projects and collaborate in small teams across the bank to deliver outcomes
• Aim for greatness, stay curious, and solve problems across the engineering stack

Requirements

• Open-minded about hiring; aptitude and attitude matter more than specific qualifications
• Proficiency in Java; you don’t need to be an expert to join
• Commitment to clean code, simple solutions, automated testing, and continuous deployment
• Interest in building tooling used by engineers and working on banking-related platforms
• Experience with or exposure to the main backend tech stack is welcome but not required

Tech Stack (main components)

• Java – majority of backend codebase
• AWS and GCP – cloud-native
• Microservice architecture
• Kubernetes (EKS)
• TeamCity for CI/CD (multiple production releases per day)
• Terraform and Grafana

Interview Process

• Initial interview with an engineer (~45 minutes)
• Take-home technical test
• Technical interview with engineers (~1.5 hours)
• Final interview with CTO/deputy CTO (~45 minutes)
