Join to apply for the Spacecraft Operations Engineer role at Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL). This role is an exciting opportunity to join the Spacecraft Operations team with responsibility to lead space missions from LEO to GEO and beyond, supporting mission development, operating procedures, LEOP and commissioning, and ongoing operations.

Responsibilities

  • Managing spacecraft operations work packages for new missions
  • Working with the System Engineer to understand and help shape CONOPS for future missions
  • Identifying and communicating spacecraft operations requirements and constraints
  • Supporting internal and external milestone reviews for projects
  • Supporting ground-based spacecraft testing
  • Producing spacecraft operations handbooks
  • Defining, documenting, and testing operational procedures
  • Defining, documenting, and testing spacecraft commissioning procedures
  • Planning and managing spacecraft commissioning campaigns
  • Providing Customer Engineer support and training
  • Supporting operation of existing SSTL on-orbit assets: routine monitoring, anomaly investigation, and responding to customer requests
  • Analyzing historical trend data for spacecraft health monitoring
  • Providing on-call support out of hours as experience grows
  • Supporting Spacecraft Operations Centre infrastructure and related ground assets
  • Collaborating with Spacecraft Operations, Ground Software, and Ground Segments teams to ensure full operational capability

Qualifications & Skills

  • Degree in Space engineering or similar
  • Good understanding of space and ground segment systems
  • Good understanding of orbital mechanics
  • Understanding of RF communications systems
  • Strong teamwork and ability to interface with others at all levels
  • Excellent written documentation and communication skills
  • Attention to detail and good organisational skills
  • Autonomy, initiative, and ability to progress tasks
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Decision making and creative problem-solving skills
  • Flexibility to work out of hours on occasion
  • Willingness for foreign travel during commissioning phases and customer support
  • Competence with MS Windows and its components; strong MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated company mindset and behaviours: accountability, drive & delivery, effective communication, self-management, teamwork

Location

The role is based at SSTL’s Head Office in Guildford with hybrid working and flexible options supported.
