Overview
We are looking for a Technical Support Office (TSO) colleague to provide a world-wide plan approval service to shipbuilders, ship owners and manufacturers. The role appraises marine electrical and control design aspects in accordance with applicable international standards and class rule sets, using procedures, experience and knowledge appropriate for the design appraisal of plans for new buildings, conversions and existing vessels, and provides technical support to designers and operators of ships and other marine platforms.
Responsibilities
- Work as a member of the Global Electrical & Control Discipline team, carrying out design appraisal and consultancy against a range of Class Rules and statutory codes. Primarily work with marine electrical/automation/electronic aspects for existing or new construction merchant ships, with opportunities to be involved with other ship types and offshore projects as needed.
- Approve electrical and control equipment and components against statutory codes and Class Rules. Conduct Type Approval activity for electrical and control equipment.
- Build and maintain good relationships with clients and internal stakeholders.
- Provide specialist technical advice to internal and external clients globally at a senior level, including designers, shipyards, LR surveyors and specialists.
- Contribute to Rule Development Projects and Proposals to keep Rules up to date with latest industry innovations.
- Contribute to bid and win processes for new projects by accurately estimating time requirements and developing scopes of work.
- Produce required deliverables within defined parameters and review colleagues’ work when requested.
- Actively seek client satisfaction and generate new opportunities with clients.
- Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation and industry standards.
- The above job description does not preclude assignment of other duties by the Global Electrical & Control Discipline Manager or line manager.
Qualifications
- The candidate should have a degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic/Telecommunication Engineering, Marine Engineering or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd's Register.
- Relevant experience with electrical and control designs and application of Class Rules to the design and construction of ships. Experience in offshore or large naval auxiliaries is advantageous. Candidates with lesser experience may be considered at a lower position.
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, prioritise work, meet LR and client deadlines, and work effectively under pressure.
- Proficiency in English (written and oral) and ability to write detailed technical reports and design appraisal documents.
- Understanding of the responsibilities of a Classification Society and the interface between Class Rules and Statutory Regulations is preferable.
