Job Description
The Sr Principal R&D Engineer is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of a technology and product pipeline strategy supporting Olympus’ Urology Business Unit. This role partners with cross-functional leaders to activate and drive target opportunities forward to exceed customer and business needs. Major responsibilities include guiding and overseeing product innovation activities (organic and inorganic), translating business strategies into product concepts, defining strategies for product specifications and design inputs, conceptual product design, and development/validation of preliminary business cases. The ideal candidate evaluates trade-offs such as cost, time and risk to make decisions with long-term impact. This person understands medical device design controls and can guide a product development project in a cross-functional team. They must be able to serve as a core team member at any stage of the product development lifecycle and communicate a vision across the organization. May provide leadership and direction to Engineering Technicians and mentor engineers within and across sites in best practices for engineering tools and methods.
Responsibilities
- Provide expertise and guidance to Olympus Engineers, Marketing, Manufacturing, and Management on Exploratory, Discovery, TRP and TDP Projects.
- Apply extensive technical expertise from concept through production.
- Develop engineering solutions, investigate competing technologies, research the patent landscape, and protect engineering solutions by filing invention disclosures.
- Design and development of new products; plan, schedule, and execute projects.
- Consult with Sales, Marketing, and clinicians to facilitate proper design of new or modified products.
- Manage, direct and support vendors involved in product development and ongoing production.
- Prepare and act as a consultant to marketing on technical brochures, training programs, and technical presentations to customers and the sales force.
- Conduct testing and collect product data to support design and manufacturing considerations such as design for manufacturability, ergonomics, and COGS.
- Work with Marketing to define user requirements and design inputs for medical devices.
- Develop verification and validation testing requirements, protocols, and reports to ensure products meet specifications.
- Provide consultation to other departments, customers, and upstream marketing as needed.
- Investigate and solve production product/process problems on demand.
- Perform design analysis (tolerance stack-ups, strength of materials, FEA risk analysis) for new and existing products.
- Maintain working knowledge of FDA requirements (e.g., 820CFR), ISO14971, IEC60601, GMP and related standards for medical devices.
- All other essential duties as directed.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 14+ years of related experience or 10+ with MS or 8+ with PhD.
Preferred:
- Experience with statistical analysis packages (Stat Ease, Minitab).
- Proficient in engineering drawing and specification documentation; proficient in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- Working knowledge of FDA requirements (820CFR), ISO14971, IEC60601, GMP and related standards.
- Proficient with Microsoft Windows environment, Outlook, Excel, MS Project, and 3D CAD/CAM software.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Ability to work with ambiguity, balance risk and opportunities, and lead teams across multiple sites.
- Effective verbal and written communication with strong presentations skills and ability to influence.
- Leadership qualities; may provide work direction.
