Staff Hardware Engineer

Location: Cambridge, UK (On-site). The role focuses on leading the development and sustainment of secure, high-performance hardware platforms within the nShield product line. This is a hands-on, on-site position with technical leadership responsibilities and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and sustaining of secure hardware platforms, including high-speed digital systems and embedded architectures
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Software, and Security teams to define hardware requirements aligned with business objectives
  • Work with the New Product Introduction (NPI) team to transition designs into volume production and support RMAs and field issues
  • Collaborate with Sales and Customer Success teams to respond to customer queries and requests, aiding sales and feedback for product design and documentation
  • Ensure hardware designs meet security certification standards and regulatory compliance (e.g., EMC, safety)
  • Drive innovation in hardware design, prototyping, and validation methodologies
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers; champion continuous improvement in design processes, tooling, and product quality
  • Assist in budgeting and tracking of hardware projects throughout the financial year
  • Represent hardware engineering in cross-functional planning and decision-making forums

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering or a related field
  • Strong experience in high-speed digital design, embedded systems, and secure product development
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex hardware design initiatives

Expertise In

  • 32/64-bit processor platforms
  • FPGAs and microcontrollers
  • Signal integrity, EMC, and safety standards
  • ECAD tools (preferably Altium)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on practical, scalable solutions
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities
  • Willingness and ability to work on-site in our Cambridge office

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering or a related discipline

Experience With

  • Python
  • Embedded C
  • Linux and U-Boot
  • VHDL for FPGA development
  • Prior involvement in products requiring formal security accreditation
