Staff Software Engineer - Engine by Starling, Manchester, United Kingdom. Hybrid working model; preference for candidates located within a commutable distance to attend in-person collaboration.

Engine by Starling is a SaaS platform powering Starling’s technology for banks and financial institutions worldwide. We build and operate modern tooling and features to support banking at scale, with a focus on clean code, automated testing, and continuous deployment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple complex projects from inception through to run.
  • Act as a technical leader, with or without direct people management responsibility.
  • Own technical challenges critical to the business
  • Identify opportunities to enhance tooling, applications, or processes and deliver innovative changes
  • Collaborate with clients, solution architects, product owners, and other engineers to meet client goals
  • Gain broad understanding of how banks operate globally
  • Shape Engine’s future capabilities, including approach, tooling, automation, and architecture
  • Lead by example in code contributions and set a high bar for others
  • Contribute to the award-winning platform and internal tooling
  • Build new features and products from scratch in a configurable way
  • Share knowledge and contribute to a learning culture
  • Own projects and work in small cross-bank teams to deliver
  • Maintain curiosity and strive for excellence
  • Join a scaling team as we change banking for good

Requirements

We are open-minded about hiring; aptitude and attitude are valued over specific qualifications. Most development is in Java; you don’t need to be an expert on day one. We value clean coding, simple solutions, automated testing, and continuous deployment.

You will bring:

  • Experience delivering changes to critical systems in distributed environments
  • High standard of technical and coding excellence
  • Understanding of DevOps practices
  • Ability to deliver complex outcomes across multiple domains and teams
  • Experience working cross-functionally with technologists and non-technical stakeholders
  • Coaching and mentoring team members
  • Leading technical delivery on large-scale projects

Backend tech stack highlights (not required to have all):

  • Java as core backend language
  • Cloud-native with AWS & GCP
  • Microservices architecture
  • Kubernetes (EKS)
  • TeamCity for CI/CD (multiple production releases per day)
  • Terraform and Grafana

Interview process

  • Initial interview with an engineer (~45 minutes)
  • Take-home technical task
  • Technical interview with engineers (~1.5 hours)
  • Final interview with CTO/deputy CTO (~45 minutes)
