Job Description

Stress Engineer – Motorsport / Applied Engineering / Formula 1

Location: Northamptonshire

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled Stress Engineer to join a world-leading engineering team supporting the development of cutting-edge motorsport and high-performance vehicle technologies. This role is suited to an experienced engineer with a deep understanding of structural analysis and a passion for delivering performance-driven, lightweight, and reliable designs.

Working within a fast-paced, collaborative environment, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the structural integrity and safety of critical components and systems across a wide range of advanced engineering projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed structural and fatigue analysis of components and assemblies using both analytical and FEA methods (linear, non-linear, static, dynamic).
  • Provide stress justification for both metallic and composite components across structures such as suspension, chassis, powertrain mounts, crash structures, and bodywork.
  • Work closely with design, materials, manufacturing, and test teams to provide clear and actionable feedback during design development.
  • Develop and execute analysis methodologies that meet project-specific requirements for performance, reliability, and compliance.
  • Support testing and validation activities, including test planning, correlation, and failure investigations.
  • Generate high-quality stress reports and documentation to support technical reviews and approvals.
  • Required Skills & Experience

    • Proven experience in stress/structural analysis engineering, ideally within motorsport, Formula 1, aerospace, or other high-performance sectors.
    • Strong proficiency in finite element analysis (FEA) tools such as ANSYS, HyperWorks, OptiStruct, Abaqus, or Nastran.
    • Experience with composite and metallic structures, including understanding of laminate theory, failure modes, and material behaviour under load.
    • Sound analytical skills with the ability to apply classical hand-calculation methods to validate or supplement FEA.
    • Good knowledge of CAD systems (Siemens NX or CATIA V5/3DX) for geometry interrogation and preparation.
    • Familiarity with relevant industry standards, load case development, and safety factors.
    • Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
    • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and under tight project deadlines.
