Overview
Senior Structural Design Engineer – Environment (Water) role at Galliford Try seeks a technically strong engineer to join the Engineering Design Team. Location: Solihull / Grangemouth (Scotland) / Nottingham (Annesley / Warrington / Bristol). Other locations may be considered.
Responsibilities
- Work as a senior structural design engineer within a growing team, delivering structural design in water and wastewater projects.
- Review schemes and provide input to the designs, including reports, calculations and initial drawings.
- Undertake detailed design in reinforced concrete and steelwork for below and above-ground structures related to water non-infra and infrastructure projects.
- Provide detailed design for modification of existing structural assets located within water/sewage treatment plants and other project locations.
- Mentor and provide technical support to junior engineers.
- Produce designs to minimise carbon footprint.
- Support management with input to planning, costings and programmes.
- Support junior structural engineers and collaborate with other disciplines, including construction teams.
- Work predominantly in the water sector; there is an opportunity to support the temporary works team.
- Attend site visits and carry out structural assessments of existing structures (e.g., water retaining structures, retaining walls) and produce assessment reports.
- Review third-party structural calculations.
Qualifications and Experience
- Demonstrable experience of 7+ years working in the relevant discipline.
- Extensive knowledge of reinforced concrete construction for the water/wastewater sector (retaining structures, pumping stations, reservoirs, foundations, etc.).
- Knowledge and experience working to current British Standards, Eurocodes, and BS EN 1992 (Eurocode 2) for concrete design.
- Experience in assessing existing structures as well as new-build designs.
- Experience with structural design software such as STAAD.Pro, Strand7 (FEA), TEKLA, TEDDS or similar.
- Strong communication, organisational and collaboration skills.
- Experience in providing structural assessments, analyses and specifications.
- Preferable experience working with various clients (e.g., Severn Trent, Scottish Water, Yorkshire Water, United Utilities, Thames Water, Southern Water); this is not essential.
- Produce and check calculations and reports to support designs.
Other Requirements
- Proven track record of working on a variety of water-sector structures.
- Knowledge and experience in designing below- and above-ground water retaining structures.
- Preferred experience in non-infrastructure projects across all stages of design through to construction.
- Extensive knowledge of standard engineering practices, techniques, procedures and structural principles.
- Supervising work to ensure technical and quality standards are met, and that work is managed to budget and programme.
- Support structural engineering projects, performing analyses and calculations as appropriate for the water sector.
- Experience liaising with clients on technical matters to understand their needs and develop solutions.
- Attendance at design, progress and site meetings as required.
- Awareness of NEC contracts.
- Competent with the company Integrated Management System including Health & Safety, Environmental and all other regulations.
- Computer literate and proficient with the MS Office suite.
- Strong written and verbal communication and organisational skills; able to produce reports in clear English.
- Proven ability to lead and work within a team to meet project deadlines.
- Keep up to date with industry best practice and identify opportunities for innovation.
- Coordinate with suppliers, specialist sub-contractors, in-house functions and construction teams.
- Understanding of design activity schedules and estimates.
- Proficient in working with multi-disciplinary teams.
