Overview

System Engineer (South Midlands / South of England) role at Ascom Americas. This position involves implementing technical customer solutions on customer sites, with occasional remote work, within the Ascom Professional Services team to help customers deliver expert care.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver activities as part of Ascom Professional Services, including analysis of requirements, design, installation, commissioning and handover of customer solutions.
  • Work on projects to implement technical customer solutions that integrate with existing systems.
  • Implement systems according to project descriptions.
  • Conduct on-site intake for project definition when needed.
  • Execute small installation tasks on small projects where a separate installation engineer is not warranted.
  • Report progress to the project manager or Engineering manager.
  • Instruct customers on the use of the system/solution when needed.
  • Take on project responsibility for smaller projects when appropriate (requirements analysis, design, installation, commissioning and handover; smaller defined as max. 1 external party and less than 15K).
  • Collaborate with customers on-site and provide consultancy to identify beneficial additions/options.
  • Be accountable for customer satisfaction and lead time KPIs for assigned tasks.
  • Demonstrate and maintain expertise on latest technologies and methods through training.
  • Establish good documentation standards to preserve traceability and serviceability of delivered products and solutions.
  • Interface with customers and peers to gather information needed for professional services.

Essential qualifications

  • A relevant technical qualification in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, telecommunications, or an IT-related discipline (e.g., HNC/HND, Apprenticeship Certificate).
  • Demonstrable experience in installation, commissioning, and fault-finding of technical systems on customer sites.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to customer sites across the UK.
  • Proficiency in using IT tools and software for documentation and reporting.
  • CSCS card or equivalent site access certification; Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Desirable qualifications

  • Specific experience with nurse call systems within long-term care and healthcare environments (e.g., HTM 08-03).
  • Experience with pager and DECT systems, ideally within commercial settings.
  • Familiarity with IP-based technology and network configuration (basic TCP/IP understanding, network switches).
  • Experience working with Ascom bespoke software platforms (specific product knowledge is advantageous).
  • Knowledge of UK regulations and safety standards; manufacturer-specific training or certifications in nurse call, pager, or DECT systems.
  • Familiarity with server operating systems (e.g., Windows Server) and database management systems (e.g., SQL) for software installation and system configuration.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 2-3 years in a field service, installation, or commissioning role, ideally with electronic communication systems.
  • Hands-on experience with physical installation, wiring, and termination of system components.
  • Proven track record of commissioning systems on-site, including configuration and testing to meet specifications.
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving technical faults (hardware and software).
  • Experience providing on-site training and handover to end-users.

Additional work experience

  • Experience commissioning IP-based nurse call systems in hospitals, care homes, or similar environments.
  • Experience commissioning DECT or paging systems in commercial buildings, hotels, or industrial sites.
  • Prior experience working with Ascom nurse call, pager, or DECT systems.
  • Experience with remote diagnostics and support.
  • Experience creating site reports and documentation.
  • Experience working directly with clients to manage expectations and ensure customer satisfaction.
