PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: Up to £50,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The BBC's Technical Operations (TechOps) team is responsible for building and managing the IT infrastructure that supports our broadcast and enterprise systems. This includes both virtual and physical platforms hosted in BBC and external data centres across London, Salford, and other global locations.

As a Systems Engineer, you'll be part of a collaborative team delivering end-to-end infrastructure solutions-from planning and design to implementation, testing, and ongoing support. You'll help ensure our systems are reliable, secure, and ready to meet the needs of a world-class media organisation.
This role is based at our White City office in London, with flexible working across home, office, and data centre sites. Some out-of-hours work is expected.
The role offers and experienced Systems Engineer the opportunity to contribute towards the planning, design, implementation, integration, commissioning, testing, and operation of virtual and physical IT infrastructure systems for the BBC Technical Operations (TechOps), Hosting Infrastructure and Platform Engineering Team. You will work as part of an engineering team to deliver technology solutions that meet agreed specifications and operational requirements for broadcast and enterprise environments.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT• Support the design, deployment, and operation of IT infrastructure systems. Assist with system commissioning, monitoring, fault resolution, and maintenance.
• Work with engineers, architects, project managers, and vendors to deliver practical, scalable solutions.
• Help maintain system documentation, test plans, and project timelines.
• Stay up to date with industry trends and emerging technologies.
• Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
• Infrastructure: Hands-on experience with HPE/Dell/Supermicro servers
• Virtualisation: Experience with VMware vSphere, vCenter, ESXi and related components.
• Storage & Backup: Proficient in SAN/NAS technologies and storage arrays (e.g. HPE/Pure); familiar with backup/DR products (e.g. Veeam/Cohesity) with an awareness of storage protocols
• OS & Networking: Familiarity with Windows Server & Linux; experience with domain services; understanding of networking
• Security & DevOps: Knowledge of IT security; familiarity with compliance standards.
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
• Cloud & Automation: Exposure to containerisation and orchestration technologies; automation using Ansible, Terraform, GitOps; scripting in PowerShell, Bash, or Python; Cloud experience with AWS S3.
• DevOps: Familiarity with GitHub, Octopus Deploy, RunDeck.
• Networking: awareness of network virtualisation/security concepts.
• Hypervisor: general awareness of the virtualisation market and key technologies involved.
