Overview

Traffic Engineer – Parking role at Somerset Council. This is a permanent, full-time position with hybrid working (home or Council offices) and 37 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Design, delivery and implementation of new parking policies and parking-related schemes, ensuring they are consistent, enforceable and aligned with Council policies and objectives.
  • Oversee all stages from concept to implementation, ensuring effective stakeholder engagement, budget management, and legal compliance.
  • Lead public consultations and pre-engagements, respond to representations and queries.
  • Monitor and manage project budgets, providing accurate forecasts and reports.
  • Draft consultation reports and collaborate with the TRO team to produce officer decision reports, ensuring TROs are legally sound and aligned with enforcement requirements.
  • Lead, manage and supervise a team of traffic engineering technicians who will assist in the delivery of this role.
  • Identify and deliver opportunities for service change and improvement, reviewing performance outcomes and customer feedback to meet requirements.

Qualifications and experience

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Transport Planning, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to derive practical solutions.
  • Experience with Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) and enforcement feasibility, with knowledge of planning, budgeting, programming and delivering parking and traffic schemes.
  • Proven experience designing, managing and implementing parking policy changes and new parking schemes; track record of leading public consultations and handling public/organizational requests and representations.
  • Deep understanding of TSRGD, Traffic Signs Manuals, and Civil Parking Enforcement legislation.

Salary and terms

The Salary for this role is Grade 10, ranging from £37,280 to £41,771 per annum.
