Job title: Traffic Engineer. Location: Merrion House, Leeds City Centre. Hybrid working subject to discussion. Hours: 37. Contract: Permanent. Salary: PO2 £39,862 - £42,839.

Leeds is a major UK city with a growing transport agenda, including major projects and a push for active travel, bus infrastructure, and road safety initiatives. This role supports the Traffic Engineering section in delivering road safety and traffic regulation programmes and contributing to urban transport strategies.

About You: As Traffic Engineer, you will bring to the role practical knowledge of traffic engineering techniques, project management, and experience in a politically sensitive local government context. You will help lead the Traffic Engineering team and work with partners to ensure the highway network is efficient, inclusive and safe.

Responsibilities

  • Deal with general traffic management issues using an objective, evidence-based approach.
  • Design and deliver individual schemes from conception to completion, including supervising staff on site as needed.
  • Check designs, quantities and estimates for projects to be implemented by the service.
  • Prepare contract documentation as required and supervise works and monitor schemes.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations for each scheme.
  • Prepare and present reports in various formats.
  • Respond to enquiries from the public and elected members; liaise with community representatives as required.
  • Support the development of staff within the team.
  • Be accountable for safety of staff, service users and contractors in line with council policies.

Qualifications and Essential Requirements

  • HNC/D, or equivalent experience relevant to the duties of the post.
  • Understanding of highway design and road safety engineering planning practice and procedures.
  • Demonstrable experience in design and delivery of traffic engineering schemes, including road safety investigations and analysis.
  • Minimum 2 years traffic engineering experience in local government or consultancy.
  • Knowledge of road safety investigation, traffic regulation order procedures, and evaluation techniques for highway and traffic schemes.
  • Experience using CAD software and GIS; ability to produce technical reports and present information clearly.
  • Full current driving licence.
