Automation Engineer – R&D\n\nLocation: Birmingham, UK\nSalary: £70,000 per annum + benefits\nContract Type: Permanent\n\nAbout the Role\n\nAre you ready to play a key role in shaping the future of a brand-new R&D facility? We are seeking a highly skilled Automation Engineer to join an exciting and innovative operation in Birmingham.\n\nThis is a senior opportunity where you will design, implement, and optimise advanced process control applications, including PLC, DCS, HMI, and SCADA systems. You’ll be instrumental in building a high-performing automation function within a regulated environment, driving forward new technologies and supporting complex capital projects.\n\nWhat You’ll Be Doing\n\n * \n\n Leading and delivering automation elements of major capital projects, from design and specification through to commissioning and validation.\n\n * \n\n Managing project life cycles to ensure safety, quality, and compliance with deadlines.\n\n * \n\n Designing detailed automation specifications, SOPs, and technical standards.\n\n * \n\n Overseeing automation within a GMP-regulated manufacturing environment.\n\n * \n\n Troubleshooting control system issues, leading root cause investigations, and ensuring robust solutions.\n\n * \n\n Configuring, testing, and validating both new and existing process equipment.\n\n * \n\n Supporting new product introductions and technology transfers through automation system changes and assessments.\n\n * \n\n Developing innovative approaches to complex engineering challenges.\n\n * \n\n Promoting safe working practices in line with environmental, health, and safety regulations.\n\n * \n\n Offering flexibility to support 24/7 operations when required.\n\nWhat We’re Looking For\n\n * \n\n Degree (BSc/MSc) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Biotech Engineering, or a related discipline.\n\n * \n\n Strong background in automation system design, installation, programming, and validation.\n\n * \n\n Experience with:\n\n * \n\n Emerson DeltaV DCS systems (v11 or above).\n\n * \n\n Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk & ControlLogix PLC platforms.\n\n * \n\n Knowledge of regulatory standards such as 21 CFR Part 11, GAMP, S88, and S95.\n\n * \n\n Proficiency with engineering documentation (URS, SDS, IQ, OQ, VSR).\n\n * \n\n Strong leadership, communication, and technical writing skills.\n\n * \n\n Hands-on expertise in troubleshooting bioprocessing operations (e.g., bioreactors, chromatography, filtration).\n\n * \n\n Familiarity with CIP/COP systems, autoclaves, HVAC, purified water systems, and building automation systems.\n\n * \n\n Solid understanding of GMP/cGMP within pharmaceutical or biotech production.\n\n * \n\n Experience in change control, CAPA, and validation practices.\n\nWhy Apply?\n\n * \n\n Opportunity to join at a pivotal stage and influence the direction of a new R&D site.\n\n * \n\n Competitive salary package of £70,000 per annum plus benefits.\n\n * \n\n Chance to work on cutting-edge technologies within the pharmaceutical/biotech sector.\n\n * \n\n Be part of a dynamic, forward-thinking environment where innovation and compliance go hand in hand
