Design Engineer - Steel Division (Infrastructure Projects)\n\nLocation: Manchester\n\nSalary: Up to £65,000\n\nAbout the Client:\n\nMy client is a well-established main contractor with a strong reputation for delivering complex, large-scale infrastructure projects across the UK. Operating in sectors such as bridges, power , utilities, and gas networks, they provide end-to-end solutions on high-profile schemes nationwide.\n\nAs part of their continued growth, they are expanding their in-house steel division, which plays a critical role in the design and delivery of bespoke steel structures for major infrastructure works.\n\nThe Opportunity:\n\nThey are now looking to appoint an experienced Design Engineer to join their Steel Division. This is a key technical role that will support the delivery of structural steelwork across a range of infrastructure projects, from bridge superstructures to power plant frameworks, pipe bridges, and substation support steel.\n\nKey Responsibilities:\n\nProduce and coordinate detailed steelwork designs from concept through to fabrication and installation.\n\nDesign steel connections, lifting points, baseplates, and associated components.\n\nWork closely with the structural engineering team to ensure compliance with design codes and standards (Eurocodes, BS 5950, etc.).\n\nGenerate and review detailed fabrication drawings using Tekla Structures or similar.\n\nEngage with project managers, site teams, and fabrication workshops to ensure designs are safe, buildable, and efficient.\n\nProvide technical support during procurement, manufacture, and construction stages.\n\nContribute to value engineering and innovation across design processes.\n\nAssist with temporary works designs where necessary, in relation to steel erection.\n\nExperience & Skills Required:\n\nDegree-qualified in Structural or Civil Engineering (or equivalent experience).\n\n3+ years of experience in structural steel design within the construction or infrastructure sector.\n\nProficient in Eurocodes and UK steelwork standards.\n\nStrong working knowledge of Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, and structural design software (e.g., Tedds, IDEA StatiCa).\n\nConfident communicator with the ability to liaise effectively across design, site, and fabrication teams.\n\nKnowledge of steel fabrication processes and site erection methods.\n\nDesirable:\n\nBackground working for a main contractor or steel fabricator.\n\nExposure to infrastructure projects - bridges, utilities, power, or gas networks.\n\nUnderstanding of temporary works, logistics, and site coordination.\n\nWhat's on Offer:\n\nJoin a respected contractor with a long-term pipeline of major infrastructure works.\n\nWork within a skilled internal steel division alongside experienced engineers.\n\nCareer progression, technical development, and long-term security.\n\nCompetitive salary and benefits package.\n\nIf you're a hands-on Design Engineer looking to play a central role in delivering impactful infrastructure across the UK, get in touch with Sharon O'Donnell at The Highfield Company to learn more
