Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineer/Designer is responsible for developing and executing mechanical and piping designs for large industrial facilities. This role involves preparing design deliverables, performing calculations, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and supporting field activities during construction and commissioning.
Successful candidates will have strong technical experience in equipment design, plant layout, and mechanical systems within an EPC or heavy industrial environment.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and prepare mechanical design packages including equipment layouts, general arrangements, and detailed drawings.
Perform mechanical calculations , such as equipment sizing, stress analysis, and load evaluations.
Specify and design process and utility equipment —including pumps, tanks, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, fans, and compressors.
Review and interpret PFDs, P&IDs, and vendor drawings to ensure proper integration of equipment and piping systems.
Prepare equipment data sheets and technical specifications for procurement and perform technical bid evaluations.
Coordinate with process, structural, electrical, and controls teams to ensure system alignment and constructability.
Participate in 3D model reviews , design reviews , and HAZOPs as required.
Develop installation details and support designs in collaboration with piping and civil teams.
Assist with material take-offs (MTOs) , cost estimates, and project proposals.
Provide field support during construction and startup, including inspection, troubleshooting, and as-built documentation.
Ensure all designs adhere to applicable industry codes and standards (ASME, API, ANSI, NFPA, OSHA, etc.).
Promote a safety-first mindset and incorporate safe design principles into every project.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical degree (Design diploma or Associate's acceptable for Designer-level roles).
5–30+ years of experience in mechanical engineering or design for heavy industrial projects (EPC ).
Proficiency in 3D modeling and design tools such as AutoCAD, Plant 3D, CADWorx, SmartPlant 3D, or SolidWorks.
Experience developing equipment layouts, piping supports, and mechanical installation details.
Strong understanding of rotating and static equipment , material selection, and fabrication methods.
Knowledge of industry codes and standards (ASME Section VIII, API 610/650, ANSI, NFPA).
Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with multi-discipline teams.
Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain (for Engineer-level roles).
Willingness to travel for field work or construction support as needed.
Qualifications
Experience in pulp & paper, chemical, power, or manufacturing facilities .
Background in design/build EPC environments .
Familiarity with 3D scanning, BIM coordination, or Navisworks Review .
Understanding of construction sequencing and field installation methods .
