OverviewRPS, a Tetra Tech company is looking for a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to be based in Abingdon, Cardiff or London. About the Team The Environmental Compliance and Ground Engineering group with RPS requires growth to support our business needs, and we need a Principal grade geotechnical engineer who is ambitious to develop their career further. You will work on some exciting new projects across the UK, with colleagues from a range of backgrounds and experience providing support and guidance to help you and others achieve your maximum potential. Our ECGE team specialises in providing a wide range of clients with ground engineering consultancy support throughout the development lifecycle. There is a chance to grow and use your experience and new skills to provide geotechnical support on a wide range of projects, providing interpretative advice and design to our expanding range of clients. No projects are the same, and vary in size and complexity, making this a great opportunity to gain maximise your potential and assist our business growth plans. What you will be doing The Principal Geotechnical Engineer level role will provide the support to junior colleagues, as well as reporting to more senior staff and having a focus on project management and delivery of their own projects. You will be engaged in a mix of projects ranging from due diligence to supporting planning applications and delivery of design works leading to and supporting construction. As such your role will include originating and checking specifications and design of geotechnical elements and foundations.
Comfortable working alone and as part of a team. Experience with: geotechnical data assessment, analysis, geotechnical design, risk assessments, modelling and reporting to EC7 and CD622. Checking the work of junior staff and input on Phase 1 geotechnical and geoenvironmental desk studies, Phase 2 Ground investigation procurement, supervision, field logging and sampling, monitoring, factual and interpretative reporting. Undertaking geotechnical design calculations in relation to the preliminary design of foundations, slopes, retaining walls and earthworks. Undertake Coal Mining Risk Assessments including development of investigatory works and development of remediation or mitigation strategies. Supervising and monitoring of earthworks or geotechnical related projects for infrastructure and land development projects. Experience of Construction Quality Assurance monitoring and validation reporting in the waste or land development sector would be an advantage. Plan and manage own project work to ensure client requirements and deadlines are met and are undertaken in accordance with the QA system. Respond to and deal with technical queries on projects as required and in a professional and timely manner. Take accountability for own and others contribution and delivery on projects and to act as a Project manager responsible for all programme and financial aspects of the project. Help grow our business by strengthening relationships with existing clients and supporting expansion into new markets. Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
Who we are looking for With considerable experience within this sector in the UK, you’ll already be broadly familiar with what we’re looking for: We require a geotechnical engineering professional with recognisable experience in the UK. You will have a thorough knowledge and understanding of geotechnical data assessment, analysis, geotechnical design, risk assessments, modelling and reporting. Any experience of geoenvironmental (contaminated land) investigation and assessment in addition to geotechnical skills will be a distinct advantage as many of our projects are multi-faceted. To support our colleagues and clients you will also be required to have working experience and understanding of EC7 geotechnical design including earthworks, foundations, settlement, and slope stability analysis. Good understanding of UK geology and geotechnical/soil mechanics principles. Practical experience of site investigation and laboratory techniques. Ability to work remotely. Demonstrable success in designing, planning and organising tasks. Proactive and methodical approach to problem solving as an individual and as part of a team with a desire to find a solution. Experience of geotechnical design of foundations, slope stability, and earthworks. Ideally with detailed experience of geotechnical design software. Experience of site investigation techniques and soil and rock logging, factual and interpretive reporting. Computer literacy in MS Office suite, use of Holebase /Open Ground, and other design software and AutoCAD proficiency (would be advantageous). Enthusiastic team player willing to undertake site as well as office-based work. Keen to learn and expand their experience. Good communication (written and verbal) skills. Starts to build strong working relationships with team, colleagues, clients and external bodies. Willingness to learn and develop their understanding of both financial and project management techniques relevant to their role and career development. Commitment to build knowledge of their chosen technical discipline including the current methods, legislation, techniques and guidance which directs the services we provide. Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload. A positive approach to their own professional development. You should be chartered (ideally with the ICE, GeolSoc or IoM3).
