Job purpose

A Principal Highways Engineer will be responsible for managing technical aspects of larger highways projects or components of major projects, meeting financial, quality and time objectives and meeting or exceeding client expectations. They may undertake a Project Management role or a Design Manager role and will work alongside team leadership. They will manage the delivery of Highways projects in accordance with Arcadis management systems to meet time, quality, budgetary and health and safety targets, ensuring maximum client satisfaction and championing client care. A Principal Engineer will promote the culture of the business.

Key accountabilities

  • Promote Health, Safety and Well-being good practice within team
  • Work collaboratively with other design disciplines within an agreed engineering management environment to integrate the overall design or solution
  • Maintain strong working relationship with aligned Arcadis Global resources and ensure local staff work effectively with Global Design colleagues
  • Develop and maintain a good understanding of Arcadis services, the client’s business and the industry to facilitate networking and credibility
  • Oversee an agreed scope of work and the operational workload of a project team including sub-contractors, ensuring work is allocated appropriately and resources are fully utilised
  • Manage the performance of team members and sub-contractors
  • Present and gain agreement of design options and opportunities to maximise profitability of design components
  • Provide technical advice to team members to support delivery and development
  • When undertaking the role of a Project Manager:
    • Manage commercial aspects of the project
    • Drive project performance, service delivery and technical and commercial outcomes
    • Communicate with team members to ensure understanding of project strategy
    • Manage deployment of resources for the project
    • Ensure integration of the overall design and quality assurance of the design
    • Lead interdisciplinary reviews of project deliverables
  • Keep up to date with developments in the Highways and wider transportation sector and seek opportunities to develop a strong professional profile
  • Maintain records of Continuing Professional Development for audit by their professional institution

Dimensions

A Principal Engineer will typically provide a controlling technical role on medium size, moderately complex projects in a single discipline. They will coordinate and manage project teams of 5 to 10 engineers and technicians and be responsible for technical delivery on projects with fees typically in the range of £100K - £500K. When undertaking the role of a Project Manager, they will be responsible for several lower category projects or a higher category project under mentoring.

Key qualifications and experience

Have a BSc/BEng or MSc/MEng or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Achieved Chartered or Incorporated Engineer professional status, or equivalent. Relevant experience including supervision of elements of large, complex projects and/or working in a project management role, with project management experience. A Principal Engineer will lead and provide direction and technical advice to team members, identify limits of personal knowledge and team capabilities, exercise sound judgement and take responsibility. Understand and comply with the Code of Conduct of their professional institution, plan, carry out and record CPD, and encourage others in professional development. Communicate well with others at all levels in English, and manage health, safety and welfare within their area of responsibility. Experience in leading and working with people from varied disciplines, backgrounds and cultures; manage teams, develop staff, and oversee quality processes. Ability to contribute to estimates for engineering budgets and schedules and to oversee technical resources on large projects.
