Overview

We are seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join Stantec in our Leeds or Cambridge office. With hybrid working, this role suits an experienced Mechanical Engineer who wants to take their next step in an industry-leading consultancy by working on exciting projects in the water sector.

Responsibilities

  • Be involved in the whole project life cycle from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed design and construction support, including site surveys and investigations.
  • Work and liaise with project managers, technical leaders, design engineers, clients, supply chain partners, contractors, planners, and other stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Manage and guide junior team members and support their development.
  • Produce and review technical outputs such as specifications, reports, and designs for pumping and water systems; develop schedules; and contribute to collaborative planning and design reviews.
  • Provide engineering input to design outputs in collaboration with other disciplines (e.g., GA drawings, 3D models, control philosophies, P&IDs).
  • Deliver technical presentations to clients and design engineers; participate in technical workshops and safety reviews (including HAZOPs and ALMs).
  • Provide technical leadership to the Flood and Coastal Mechanical team and support the development of junior engineers.
  • Understand lowland drainage pumping stations and assess existing site infrastructure to deliver mechanical design solutions; consider implications of the Eel Regulations 2009 on pumping stations.
  • Apply experience across energy, infrastructure, and water sectors as relevant to the role.

About You

  • Experienced Mechanical Engineer, ideally chartered with the IMechE.
  • Experience in mechanical design with pump station optioneering, design, construction management, and commissioning.
  • Proven ability to produce and review technical specifications, reports, and designs for pumping and water systems; ability to size and design pumping systems; familiarity with collaborative planning reviews.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to deliver technical presentations and participate in workshops; capable of providing input into multidisciplinary design discussions and safety reviews.
  • Technical leadership capabilities and a track record of mentoring junior engineers.
  • Understanding of lowland drainage pumping stations and their operation.
  • Awareness of the Eel Regulations 2009 and their implications for flood and coastal pumping stations.
  • Interest or experience in the energy, infrastructure, and water sectors.
  • Commitment to client focus, designing with the community in mind, collaboration, and service excellence.
