Vacancy: Principal Design Engineer - Protection

Join our Smart Infrastructure Division as Principal Design Engineer – Protection. Siemens Digital Grid have secured a position on the National Grid 5 Year Light Current Framework, delivering robust systems with the latest Siemens technology on new National Grid substations and extending the existing infrastructure. A safer and lower carbon project delivery footprint will be adopted.

Location: This role allows you to be based anywhere in the UK, with remote work and occasional travel. Initially, you would be present at the Hebburn office 2/3 days per week for training.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver transmission protection and control systems for end-customers from various domains.
  • Technically lead Protection engineering teams, mentoring and coaching other members to support their growth.
  • Assess and optimise the Protection Engineering process to deliver projects to specification and on programme.
  • Provide innovative solutions as technical lead for protection on UK Transmission and Distribution network projects.
  • Ensure Siemens solutions align with latest policies and standards.
  • Provide a high level of customer service and maintain high standards of quality.
  • Demonstrate sound problem solving, fault finding, and analytical thinking.
  • Provide technical feedback to Sales, Proposals, and Operations departments.
  • Foster a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Experience in multidisciplinary teams delivering technical Protection and Automation solutions.
  • Application of protection and control systems on the National Grid transmission network.
  • Detailed knowledge of National Grid delivery standards and specifications.
  • National Grid Contractor Design Approval Engineer experience (Assurance or Contractor).
  • Detailed design knowledge including circuit diagrams, interface diagrams, cubicle design, settings, testing FAT.
  • Experience with industry-standard design, simulation, and test tools; SIPROTEC/DIGSI knowledge desirable.
  • Experience serving NG as direct customer and/or EPC customers providing protection solutions for brownfield extensions or greenfield builds.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for coordination between team/function groups and customers.
  • Minimum qualification of HNC/HND (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering with extensive experience in the Electricity Transmission and Distribution Industry.
