Location: United Kingdom (flexible – remote work with occasional travel). Initial presence at Hebburn office 2/3 days per week for training.

Join our Smart Infrastructure Division as Principal Design Engineer – Protection at Siemens. Base salary: £70k – £85k. This role supports Siemens Digital Grid on the National Grid 5 Year Light Current Framework, delivering robust protection systems for new National Grid substations and extending existing infrastructure. Our approach emphasizes safer, lower-carbon project delivery footprints.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver transmission protection and control systems for end-customers across various domains and fields.
  • Technically lead a Protection engineering team, mentoring colleagues to support their growth.
  • Assess and optimise the Protection Engineering process to deliver projects to specification and on programme.
  • Provide innovative solutions as technical lead for protection on UK Transmission and Distribution network projects.
  • Ensure Siemens solutions align with latest policies and standards.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to clients and maintain high quality standards.
  • Utilise fault finding, problem solving and analytical thinking skills.
  • Provide technical feedback for Sales, Proposals and Operations.
  • Foster a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

Qualifications and experience

  • Experience in multidisciplinary teams delivering Protection and Automation solutions.
  • Application of protection and control systems on National Grid transmission network.
  • Detailed knowledge of National Grid delivery, specifications and standards.
  • National Grid Contractor Design Approval Engineer experience (Assurance or Contractor).
  • Detailed design knowledge including circuit diagrams, interface diagrams, cubicle design, settings and testing FAT.
  • Experience with industry-standard design, simulation and test tools; SIPROTEC/DIGSI knowledge desirable.
  • Experience engaging NG as a direct customer and/or EPC for brownfield extensions or greenfield build.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to coordinate between the team, function groups and the customer.
  • Minimum qualification: HNC/HND (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering with extensive experience in Electricity Transmission and Distribution.
