Job Description

R&D Engineer (Electronics & Electrical)

Portishead | Permanent | Full-time

An innovative engineering business at the forefront of subsea energy and rail technology is looking for a curious and hands-on R&D Engineer (Electronics & Electrical) to join their growing team.

This is a chance to be part of a company that thrives on creativity, technical excellence, and collaboration. Engineers here are encouraged to push boundaries, bring ideas to life, and see their work go from concept through to real-world application.

The Role:

Working closely with the R&D Engineering Manager and a multi-disciplinary team, the R&D Engineer will:

  • Carry out cutting-edge research into electronics and electrical engineering challenges, modelling and simulating new approaches.
  • Develop and prototype sensor-based condition monitoring technologies, taking concepts through proof-of-concept to working solutions.
  • Support product development by transferring innovative designs into commercial applications.
  • Get hands-on with testing and commissioning, both in the lab and out in the field.
  • Contribute to patents, technical papers, and collaborations with academia, keeping the business at the forefront of research and industry knowledge.
  • Play a key role in cross-functional projects, ensuring new technologies integrate seamlessly into the wider portfolio.

This role offers the rare opportunity to work across the full R&D spectrum – from blue-sky thinking and prototyping, to hands-on testing, right through to seeing products make a tangible impact in critical industries.

What They’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • A Master’s (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or similar.
  • Strong experience in electronics/electrical design and simulation tools (e.g. LTSPICE, Matlab, Altium).
  • Hands-on lab skills including soldering, wiring, and testing prototypes with a wide range of equipment.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (Python or C preferred).
  • A genuine curiosity and drive to solve complex problems, explore new technologies, and learn continuously.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to share findings in papers, presentations, and conferences.

Why Join?

This is more than a job – it’s a chance to:

  • Work on projects that directly shape the future of critical industries.
  • Collaborate with experts across engineering, research, and academia.
  • Be part of a supportive, innovative, and dynamic team where your contributions are recognised and valued.
  • Develop your career in a business that’s scaling and investing heavily in R&D.

If you’re an engineer who thrives on variety, loves taking ideas from concept to reality, and wants to see your work make a genuine difference, this role offers the perfect platform.
