Position: Senior EC&I Engineer\n\nLocation: Sheffield\n\nSalary: £50-65, commensurate with experience\n\nThe Senior EC&I Engineer will lead the design, development, and delivery of Electrical, Control & Instrumentation systems across reputable and technically demanding projects. Operating as a key technical authority within the EC&I department, this role will ensure that system architectures are robust, compliant, and aligned with both customer requirements and regulatory standards. \n\nYou will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, subcontractors, and clients to define specifications, resolve complex technical challenges, and deliver high-integrity control systems that support safe, reliable, and efficient operation of bespoke engineered solutions.
\n\nKey Responsibilities \n\nLead the full lifecycle of EC&I systems design, from concept and specification through to commissioning and handover.\nDefine Electrical control system architectures, specify equipment such as cabling and instrumentation, and lead hardware and software integration activities.\nPrepare and approve detailed engineering documentation including: \nElectrical Schematics and General Arrangements\nControl Philosophy and Functional Design Specifications (FDS)\nCable Schedules, I/O Lists, and Panel Layouts\nInstrumentation Datasheets and Wiring Diagrams\nFamiliarity with PLC/HMI software and interface logic using platforms such as Siemens, Rockwell, or Schneider.\nCoordinate with mechanical, structural, and safety engineering teams to ensure integrated and cohesive system design.\nConduct and lead design reviews, ensuring compliance with relevant codes, standards, and customer specifications.\nManage third-party suppliers and panel builders, providing technical oversight throughout procurement, manufacture, and FAT.\nSupport installation and commissioning activities, including troubleshooting and site acceptance testing (SAT).\nAct as a mentor to junior engineers, fostering technical growth and promoting knowledge sharing across the team.\nLiaise directly with clients to clarify technical requirements, report progress, and resolve emerging issues throughout the project lifecycle.\nContribute to project planning and risk management by providing technical inputs to project managers and planners.\nSupport bids and proposals with technical insight, concept designs, and cost/time estimates for EC&I scope.\nPromote continuous improvement across EC&I processes, templates, and design tools.Skills & Experience Required \n\nDegree-qualified in Electrical Engineering, Control & Instrumentation, or a related discipline.\nSolid understanding of control system principles, instrumentation, motor control, and variable speed drives (VSDs).\nSubstantial experience in delivering EC&I systems in complex or safety-regulated environments.\nWorking knowledge of PLC/HMI systems (e.g. Siemens S7/TIA Portal, Rockwell Studio 5000, Schneider EcoStruxure).\nProficient in producing electrical drawings using CAD tools (e.g. EPLAN, ElectricalOM, AutoCAD Electrical).\nFamiliarity with applicable standards and regulations such as\nDemonstrable ability to lead multidisciplinary design teams and coordinate with other engineering disciplines.\nSkilled in technical documentation, stakeholder communication, and supplier management.\nFull UK driving licence (travel between offices and client sites required).Desirable Qualifications & Experience \n\nChartered Engineer (CEng) or working toward professional registration.\nExperience in high-integrity or regulated sectors such as Nuclear, Defence, or Aerospace.\nBackground in the design of Overhead Electrical Travelling Cranes (OHETCs), automated handling systems, or large-scale machinery.\nHands-on experience in electrical panel design and PLC programming.\nKnowledge of Functional Safety standards (e.g.
