About the role Marine vessels represent some of the most complex manufactured assets in the world and provide interesting, challenging and rewarding work for the people who design, build and support them through life. As an Engineer within our Marine Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to be involved in projects across the lifecycle of various types of vessels, most notably specialised, lightweight and high-speed vessels for both UK and international customers. This role primarily supports our Commercial Shipping Capability. You will be involved in solving engineering challenges through leading the development and delivery of the Marine Engineering aspects of our projects. Projects will range from supporting customers in procuring and designing new ships to delivering complex in-service changes for both commercial and naval vessels, through to the delivery of feasibility studies, technical engineering investigations and analyses. Responsibilities
System design and equipment selection development and integration using 2D and 3D modelling. Surveys to support design changes and investigations. Engineering investigations to resolve in-service defects and safety issues. Project management of engineering tasks and projects. Engaging with the wider industry. Design of mechanical systems and arrangements with supporting calculations; review of production engineering 3D models; liaising with suppliers, partners and clients to develop design solutions. Contribution to delivery of projects across our wider portfolio, including submarines and other consulting projects within our market areas. Support for research and development, including development of future ship design concepts and new capabilities, tools and processes.
Work placement and travel This role is based out of our Fareham office, with a balance of in-office, remote and hybrid working considered. Travel to other BMT offices and customer sites will be necessary as required; occasional overseas travel may be required. About you Candidates will have an HNC/HND and/or a Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Marine Engineering. Ideally you will be professionally qualified (chartered engineer or incorporated by domain experience) or on a path to registration. You will be commercially aware and able to ensure work is carried out to an appropriate standard and level of detail, with the ability to produce clear, well-presented drawings and calculations. You will need a high degree of initiative and autonomy to meet targets and deadlines, and strong interpersonal skills to communicate with stakeholders through meetings, reports and presentations. Essential skills
Minimum of three years of relevant design experience in the marine commercial industry for vessels in the range 15–70m+. Understanding of ship systems integration within ships or marine platforms. Ability to produce mechanical ship system schematics (AutoCAD), ship and technical specifications, vessel arrangements; experience with construction materials and techniques; ability to optimise designs for buildability and weight; experience with multiple classification/code regulations. Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D; ideally 3D CAD skills; proficiency in Microsoft programs. Good analytical and problem-solving skills with experience leading technical projects to time, cost and quality.
Desirable skills
Defence domain experience. Ability to coach and mentor less experienced staff. Ability to receive and give feedback. Flexibility to be deployed on a range of projects and customer sites. Experience with PLM software or document management processes.
