This is a permanent role. Competitive salary plus car/car allowance and flexible benefits. The role involves working on complex engineering projects to help deliver the UK’s Net Zero targets across the energy system, from generation, transmission, distribution, and storage to load-end consumers in manufacturing, processing, data, and recycling. This is a home-based role in Scotland with hybrid working and travel to Freedom/NG Bailey offices and client sites across the UK as required.

Responsibilities

  • Promote safety through design and actively participate in hazard review meetings.
  • Perform site surveys and collaborate with site teams as required.
  • Develop concept and preliminary designs based on tender information.
  • Generate and review general arrangement drawings, substation layouts, single-line diagrams, and related documentation.
  • Prepare and refine technical specifications for designs and equipment.
  • Carry out design calculations to support plant design, including:
    • Switchroom blast pressure calculations
    • Busbar sizing and short-circuit calculations
    • Cable thermal and mechanical force calculations
    • Cable sizing
    • Switchroom heating and ventilation calculations
    • Small power and lighting calculations
    • CT/VT sizing
    • Compound lightning protection calculations
    • Switchroom lighting calculations
    • Lightning protection design calculations
  • Ensure timely delivery, effective requirements management, and a “right-first-time” approach.
  • Achieve key performance indicators for design quality and on-time delivery.
  • Comply with project documentation, employer requirements, and industry standards.

What We’re Looking For

Senior engineers are expected to bring technical, ethical, social, and management competence to every job. Essential skills include:

  • Strong budgetary and project management capabilities.
  • Good commercial understanding of design and construction contract forms such as NEC.
  • Experience of working within contract conditions.

We actively encourage professional registration and chartership. Senior engineers are expected to be chartered or close to achieving chartership.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred).
  • Chartered Status (preferred): Chartered Engineer (CEng) with a professional body such as IET or IEE.
  • Strong experience in EHV/HV substation plant design, with a proven track record of delivering complex projects within the power sector.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Health & Safety qualification (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) desirable but not essential.
