Senior Principal Simulation and Means Engineer

Responsibilities :
Technical authority in the employees domain – providing support to Engineering management for identification and driving priorities through technical roadmaps
Support of the product roadmaps in the employees domain
Financial responsibilities: Influence and awareness of product profitability and product competitiveness. No direct budget to manage but is expected to influence budget identification via program and engineering managers.
Organise and support peer reviews in the employees domain
Process Accountability
Ensure traceability and compliance with Airworthiness and customer (and/or internal) requirements
Delivery of projects according to Safran Product Introduction Process (requirements capture and traceability, design validation and verification, design reviews etc.)
Definition and adherence to project milestones, both external and internal
Support for operations; permits/concessions/Corrective actions etc.
Interface with other functions (e.g. Operations, Business Development, Supply Chain, Programmes, Quality etc.) in coordination with Technical Project Manager or Program Managers (if applicable)
Working under the direction of the Simulation and Means Team Lead; carry out thermal, vibration, structural Finite Element Analysis using Ansys Workbench
Estimating task duration for single tasks or work packages
Coordination with Lead Engineers and Project / Programme Managers to stay abreast of customer needs and estimate forward demand
Support Simulation and Means Team Lead with reviewing the team's working practices and driving improvements to processes and procedures
Support the Simulation and Means Team Lead with long-range planning for the team to ensure the development of team members and processes follows company strategic plans. Coach team members as required
Provide training and guidance on Stress principles in order to grow the skill throughout the design community
Authoring, reviewing, and approving engineering documentation related to Simulation and Means activities
Review requirements from other Safran Business to help provide Simulation and Means support
Knowledge transfer: transfer the employees experience to less experienced engineers in the business
Support product improvement plan & implementation, then re-injected lessons learned into Research & Technology activities
Support Simulation and Means Team Lead establish and co-ordinate the knowledge sharing sessions of techniques, processes and technologies across the POWER Division of Safran
During bid phase, support with specialist functional know-how / lessons learnt to estimate Engineering Non Recurring Cost for the relevant work packages
Promoting Safran Simulation and Means capability in appropriate ways, e.g. representing the company at conference talks
Job Requirements :
Experience in an appropriate Engineering discipline (or a relevant engineering qualification)
Experience in an industrial environment where the design, development and manufacture of precision machines is the core business.
Experience in the analysis of high speed rotating equipment with respect to stress, thermal and vibration/rotor dynamics using Finite Element Analysis particularly ANSYS.
A thorough knowledge of fatigue (the causes, effects and prevention) together with the ability to predict component life against defined mission profiles.
A thorough knowledge of typical aerospace materials – to include their benefits and limitations and the experience to be able to recommend a suitable material for any particular application.
Extensive experience in material failure analysis/testing (e.g. Non Destructive Testing) and as well as materials testing (e.g. tensile, hardness, impact, toughness, etc.) and assessing how tolerant materials are to heat, corrosion or chemical attack
Knowledge of British and International material specifications would be beneficial.
Knowledge of typical aerospace materials (e.g. Nickel Alloys, High Strength Aluminium or Steel Alloys, Plastics and Polymers) including their benefits and limitations and the experience to be able to recommend a suitable material for any particular application would be beneficial.
Awareness of current Computer Aided Design tools (NX, Catia V5, ANSYS, etc.) and their capabilities is essential.
Competent to produce and approve technical reports.
Competent in using Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project tools.
An understanding of electrical machines, in particular related to power generation and motors would be beneficial.
An understanding of fluid dynamics and tribology would be beneficial.
An understanding of CFD would be beneficial.
Experience in LS-Dyna and N-Code would be beneficial.
An understanding of bearing selection and lifetime calculation would be beneficial
Some management experience would be beneficial (Work Package Owner/Team Leader for example)
