Responsibilities

• Designing, writing, shipping and maintaining code
• Building internal tools and shaping our processes
• Contributing expertise to decisions that guide the future of the product and the team

Our platform is built on Elixir, using the Phoenix web framework, on top of Postgres, Redis, Google Pub/Sub and OpenSearch. We’ll support you to learn Elixir/Phoenix on the job.

How We Work

We use a lightweight agile approach to product development, leaning on data for decision making, and centering our users’ needs. We’re a collaborative team – you’ll work with designers and product managers as well as fellow engineers. We work on-site at our office in Shoreditch, London, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We ship changes many times a day and engineers are involved in the full lifecycle of their work.

Hiring Process

• An introduction call with our Talent Acquisition team
• A screening call with a Breakroom engineer
• A 1 hour take home exercise
• A technical interview (review take home, engineering problem, general questions)
• A ways of working interview with two people from other teams

Requirements

• Be motivated to work towards our mission
• Have a thorough working knowledge of how to build for the web
• Have in depth experience with a backend language such as Elixir, Ruby, Python or Node.JS
• Have experience with a full stack web framework such as Phoenix, Ruby on Rails or Django
• Have experience with React style frameworks (such as Preact) and plain JavaScript
• Have experience managing CSS/SASS
• Experience collaborating closely with designers
• Developed complex features/services
• Comfortable with SQL databases
• Strong communication of complex technical ideas across the business
• Experience in cross-functional teams
• Ability to participate in supporting Breakroom out of hours

Nice-to-have

• 5+ years of web software experience
• Experience on a consumer product balancing user needs with technical effort
• Experience writing Elixir or another functional language
• Interest in SEO, UX, user research, or accessibility
• Experience in a fast-paced small team
• Experience with high-traffic operations
• Mentoring or leading technical decisions in a cross-functional team
