Overview

Software Engineer - Java - Engine by Starling is a Backend role focused on the Engine Platform, a SaaS technology powering Starling and made available to banks and financial institutions globally. Engine is Starling's software-as-a-service business, built to enable rapid growth and innovation in banking across markets.

Engine engineers work across teams to deliver new features, improve tooling, and scale the platform, with a culture that values clean coding, automated testing, and continuous deployment. The company emphasizes its five values: Listen, Keep It Simple, Do The Right Thing, Own It, and Aim For Greatness. Hybrid working is supported; candidates should be within commutable distance to the office to enable in-person collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the award-winning platform and internal tooling.
  • Build new features and products from scratch in a configurable way.
  • Share knowledge and contribute to the learning culture.
  • Own projects and work in small teams across the bank to deliver results.
  • Aim for greatness by staying curious and solving problems thoughtfully.
  • Be part of a scaling team as the organization grows and banking changes for good.

Requirements

We are open-minded about hiring; aptitude and attitude are valued over specific experience or qualifications. The team primarily codes in Java, but you do not need to be an expert when you join. We value clean coding, simple solutions, automated testing and continuous deployment. The goal is to build tooling used daily by engineers and to work on the core banking platform.

Core backend tech stack includes, but is not limited to: Java (majority of backend), AWS & GCP (cloud-native), microservices, Kubernetes (EKS), TeamCity for CI/CD, Terraform, Grafana. Prior experience in all of these is not required, but helpful.
