Our Engineering Research and Development department (ER&D) is a fast growing function within Tata Technologies Limited that is assembled to work on exciting projects globally for multiple customers. It comprises highly specialized engineers across Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Heavy Machinery.
The Role
As a Thermal System Engineer within the BEV/xHEV Propulsion Systems team, you will be responsible for the design, development, and validation of thermal management systems that support electrified powertrains. This includes battery cooling, e-motor and inverter thermal control, and integration with vehicle-level HVAC and thermal architectures. You will collaborate across cross-functional teams to ensure optimal thermal performance, efficiency, and reliability of propulsion systems.
Area of Responsibility
Lead the design and development of thermal systems for BEV and xHEV propulsion platforms
Define system-level thermal requirements and translate them into component specifications
Perform thermal simulations and analysis using tools such as GT-Suite, ANSYS, or MATLAB/Simulink
Support integration of thermal systems with battery packs, power electronics, and electric drive units
Collaborate with suppliers and internal teams to ensure component performance and compliance
Conduct DFMEA, DVP&R, and support validation testing at component and system levels
Interface with vehicle architecture, controls, and calibration teams to optimize thermal strategies
Support prototype builds, rig testing, and vehicle-level commissioning activities
Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation in thermal system design and efficiency
Knowledge / Experience
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (Master's preferred)
Strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics
Strong experience with thermal systems in automotive or aerospace applications
Familiarity with electrified powertrain components and architectures
Proficiency in thermal simulation tools and CAD software (e.g., CATIA, Creo)
Knowledge of automotive development processes (V-cycle, APQP, etc.)
Excellent problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks and deliver within tight timelines
Desirable Experience
Prior experience in BEV/xHEV propulsion system development
Exposure to battery thermal management and refrigerant-based cooling systems
Understanding of regulatory standards and safety requirements for high-voltage systems
Experience working in an Agile or model-based development environment
