Job Title: 3rd Line Engineer
Employer: Foot Anstey
Location: Hybrid working from Exeter, Bristol, Southampton or Plymouth

Role: 3rd Line Engineer within the Core Infrastructure and Apps (CIA) team. Full-time role with an expectation of a minimum of two office-based days per week, travel to other office locations as needed, and alignment with the Technical Lead.

What you'll do

  • Provide third line support and resolution for incidents, requests and problems within an ITIL framework for business-critical applications and productivity tools.
  • Act as primary liaison between application vendors and internal/external support teams to ensure stable and available solutions for users.
  • Plan and coordinate application upgrades, ensuring timely execution and mitigation of end-of-life risks within change control, with thorough testing and communications plans.
  • Support a dynamic transformation roadmap, including migration of core business applications to cloud platforms.
  • Provide technical input into project delivery such as server builds, application rollouts and configuration changes.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation (designs, runbooks, workflows, knowledge articles) for 1st-3rd line support and architectural approval.
  • Make constructive recommendations to improve platforms and processes by researching solutions and presenting options to senior stakeholders.
  • Evaluate third-party proposals for alignment with business objectives and technical compatibility.
  • Monitor system alerts and respond according to predefined procedures.
  • Work with Software & Data Engineer teams to maintain data processing and data feeds between systems.
  • Collaborate with Cyber Security to ensure alignment with patching lifecycles and vulnerability mitigation.
  • Coordinate with Managed Services Partner on network upgrades, changes, and application packaging, testing and deployments.
  • Identify opportunities for automation through scripting and templates; operate within an Agile sprint model.
  • Support onboarding and upskilling of new and existing team members.

What we're looking for

We are seeking a highly capable and adaptable individual with a strong foundation in enterprise application support and modern cloud technologies. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:

Technical Expertise (essential)

  • Proven experience in a 3rd line application support or infrastructure engineering role, ideally within a legal or professional services environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server Hybrid environments and Microsoft 365, including:
    • Entra ID
    • Microsoft Teams
    • Exchange Online
    • Windows 11
    • Intune
    • Mimecast
    • Windows Server – Active Directory, Group Policy, IIS, PKI, NPS
    • M365 apps (Office) – templates, add-ins and macros
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure services, including:
    • Azure Virtual Machines and App Services
    • Azure Networking
    • Azure Storage
    • Azure Monitor
    • Azure Security and Identity Management
    • Automation using ARM templates (desired)
    • Logic Apps and Event Grid/Service Bus (desired)
  • Scripting using PowerShell and Microsoft Graph
  • SQL Server fundamentals (queries, T-SQL, stored procedures, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps in an Agile delivery model
  • Understanding of Cyber Security standards (Cyber Essentials, NIST, CIS Benchmarks)
  • Understanding of Information Security standards (ISO 27001 is desired)
  • Industry certifications (MD-102/MS-102, AZ-104, AZ-800/AZ-801) and ITILv4 are advantageous

Legal Application Knowledge (highly desired)

  • Working knowledge of key legal applications, including iManage, Elite 3E, InTapp Time, Elite MatterSphere, Chrome River/Emburse, HighQ, Litera products
  • Ability to act as technical lead for these platforms, liaising with vendors and internal teams for stability, upgrades and integration

Other Technologies

  • Virtual Cloud PC services (Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365)
  • Power Platform awareness; Power Automate, Power Apps; Dynamics 365
  • LogicMonitor or similar monitoring platforms
  • Signature 365, external domain and certificate management
  • Print/Scan, Physically managed services tooling
  • Cisco networking basics (DNS, DHCP, VLANs, load balancing); Cisco Meraki
  • ServiceNow, Qualys, Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Purview

Infrastructure & Vendor Management

  • Experience with environments delivered via managed service providers
  • Ability to review and challenge third-party proposals in the business interests

  • Strong troubleshooting and scalable solution delivery
  • Methodical, calm, autonomous working style with clear communication to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Excellent documentation, reporting and presentation skills
