The Role

As an Associate System Engineer, you will join our maritime autonomous systems engineering team and we are interested in speaking with candidates who have an interest in autonomous and unmanned systems and are keen to apply systems engineering approach to developing systems through the engineering lifecycle; the position is widely varied and we welcome candidates from an air, land or maritime domain.

Day-to-day, you will assist to develop solutions and provide services to support work in the maritime, land and air domains. We test and design naval mission systems for the likes of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and external customers, who come to us for a battle-winning edge. We’re at the forefront of the ever-changing naval landscape, thanks to our extensive network of research partners and our constant testing, assessment and optimisation of systems and components for safety and efficiency.

Your responsibilities

  • Work as part of a technical team to provide systems expertise for design, development, evaluation and assessment activities for a range of small-scale projects, and support the provision of expertise to higher level projects and programmes
  • Under supervision provide technical support and advice to customers on system requirements, design solutions, testing and performance
  • Under supervision provide support to the development of novel autonomous solutions
  • Under supervision produce technical documentation in support of work undertaken

Essential experience

  • Basic understanding of systems engineering, its applicability, lifecycle processes, and systems considerations
  • Experience of Unmanned Vehicle safety and certification issues preferably in at least one of the following domains: Air, Sea, Surface and Underwater (Desirable not essential)
  • Willing to travel to other UK sites where required (expected up to 10% travel time)
  • 2-4 years relevant engineering/ system engineering experience.

Essential qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent with demonstrated professional development i.e IEng, CEng or equivalent

This role is 37 hours per week based at our Portsmouth site. Hybrid working patterns are available. Travel to other QinetiQ and customer sites will be expected.
