Freedom Professional Services are seeking a Senior Design Engineer (SCADA) to join our growing team and work on an array of complex and challenging engineering projects, helping to deliver the country’s Net Zero targets. Our projects span the complete energy system from generation, transmission, distribution and storage to load-end consumers in manufacturing, processing, data and recycling.

The successful candidate will be able to evidence a history of teamworking, career achievement, high-quality project and work experience to date, and can draw on their professional networks to gain key insights, new work leads, third-party support and second opinions.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and maintain SCADA/communication systems for a variety of clients in sectors including utilities, oil and gas, manufacturing, industrial automation and various other communication networks.
  • Configure and optimize network infrastructure & communication protocols such as IEC 61850; DNP3; PRP; PTP; NTP; Modbus, OPC, Profibus, etc. for seamless integration with field devices (RTUs, PLCs, IEDs); ensure stable connectivity between SCADA centres & remote sites; configure secure VPNs & remote access protocols for safe, off-site monitoring and control.
  • Understand client requirements and produce network architecture philosophy diagrams, IED telecommunication diagrams, SCADA & Telecommunications Panel designs, Network IP allocation, I/O schedules, Cable & Core schedules, etc.
  • Assist with setup and commissioning of SCADA systems at client sites; troubleshoot field devices and network issues; perform preventive and corrective maintenance on SCADA infrastructure and hardware.
  • Efficiently design/develop SCADA/communication systems (e.g., Ignition, Siemens WinCC, GE iFIX) for real-time data acquisition and control of critical infrastructure.
  • Conduct system upgrades, testing, and validation for new features, components, and patches.
  • Implement cybersecurity measures to safeguard SCADA systems against threats.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth integration and deployment of SCADA systems.
  • Provide technical documentation and training materials for system users and maintenance staff.
  • Support on Protection & Control Design for Transmission & Distribution utilities.
  • Critically evaluate engineering problems and consider a range of technical solutions.
  • Communicate effectively to demonstrate diligence, prioritize tasks, and ensure understanding of relevant legislation (CDM and ESQCR) relevant to Transmission and Distribution networks.
  • Review and provide constructive feedback on reports and drawings by Junior Engineers; mentor and guide Junior Engineers to foster professional growth.
  • Adhere to the company’s SHEQ requirements and GSOP in daily responsibilities.

What we’re looking for

Senior engineers joining the team should bring diverse skills across technical, ethical, social, and management areas. Strong budgetary and project management skills are required, with good commercial knowledge of design and construction contract forms such as NEC, and experience with contract conditions. The business supports chartership in engineering, and senior engineers are expected to be chartered or near chartership attainment.

Qualifications and experience

  • Degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred).
  • Chartered Status (Preferred): CEng with a body such as IET or IIEE is highly desirable.
  • Good understanding of CDM 2015 Regulations & ESQCR.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • 11kV up to 400kV detailed design experience.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD is essential.
  • CSCS (or similar – SHEA Power) Card (Desirable).
  • Health & Safety qualification (NEBOSH, IOSH or similar) (Desirable).
